Kalbarri is located 580 km north of Perth , in the Mid-west region of Western Australia . It's the base town of the
well-known Kalbarri
National Park . The major
geographical features and highlights in the park and the town of Kalbarri include:
(1) Coastal cliffs --
Spectacular coastal cliffs are located on
the coast near the mouth of the Murchison River and south of the town of Kalbarri .
(2) Murchison River
Gorge --
The Murchison River Gorge runs for nearly
80 km on the lower reaches of Murchison River .
Kalbarri National
Park preserves the inland desert regions of red and white
striped sandstone east of the town of Kalbarri ,
particularly the lower reaches of the Murchison River
and its gorge
(3) Murchison River
Cruise --
Sailing from Kalbarri Jetty, Murchison
River Cruise runs through the rugged wilderness at the mouth of the river by
Meanarra Hill.
(4) Pelican Feeding and Wildflowers --
Pelican Feeding is another tourist
attraction taking place at the Town
Beach daily in the
morning. Kalbarri is also famous for its wildflowers, most of which bloom from
late July through spring and into early summer.
Murchison River Gorge runs for nearly
80 km on the lower reaches of the Murchison
River with up to 129 m
deep. Some of the specific points of interest for tourists include:
(1) Natures Window and The Loop Walk Trail
Nature's Window, a wind-eroded opening in
the layered sandstone, frames a view of the river. It is a moderate 800 m return walk from the car park. Keen
and well prepared walkers can continue further into the gorge system and
complete the eight km Loop Trail – a challenging but spectacular walk.
(2) Z-Bend
A moderately easy 500 m
walk from the car park takes you to the Z-Bend, a rock lookout which overhangs
the Murchison River . Visitors with a good
level of fitness can also hike down into the gorge and access the river’s edge.
(3) Hawks Head
A short path leads to a lookout providing
expansive views over the Murchison River Gorge.
(4) Ross Graham Lookout
A 350 m trail leads from the car park to the river
pools, making this the easiest place in the national park to access the river.
