Hutt Lagoon Pink Lake & Port Gregory, WA

Hutt Lagoon Pink Lake & Port Gregory, WA

Port Gregory
Port Gregory, located 510 km north of Perth, between Geraldton and Kalbarri, is a picturesque fishing and holiday village encircled by 5 km of exposed coral reef. The town lies between the ocean and the Pink Lake, Hutt Lagoon. The lake is the main attraction in Port Gregory.

Hutt Lagoon (Pink Lake)
Hutt Lagoon is a saline coastal lake located on Coral Coast just north of the mouth of Hutt River, in the Mid-west region of Western Australia. The lake is about 14 km in length along its northwest-southeast axis, parallel with the coast. It is around 2.3 km in width. Like many of its kind in Western Australia, its pink hue is created by bacteria (Dunaliella salina), which becomes trapped in the salt granules. Dunaliella salina is a carotenoid-producing algae. It's a source of ß-carotene, a food-colouring agent and source of vitamin A. Depending on the time of day, the season and the amount of cloud cover, the lake changes through the spectrum of red to bubble-gum pink to a lilac purple. The best time of day to visit is mid-morning or sundown. Hutt Lagoon can be easily accessed by road along the George Grey Drive, between Geraldton and Kalbarri.
